Placing God at the Center: More Than Just a Priority

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to fall into the trap of treating our relationship with God as just another item on our to-do list. We often find ourselves shuffling our priorities, moving God up and down like items in a dresser drawer. But what if we've been approaching this all wrong? What if God isn't meant to be a priority at all, but rather the very essence that permeates every aspect of our lives?

The first commandment states, "You shall have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). This isn't just about avoiding idol worship in the traditional sense. In our modern context, it's about recognizing the subtle ways we elevate other aspects of our lives - our jobs, relationships, hobbies, or even our own desires - above our relationship with God.

Consider the practice of Lent, a 40-day period of reflection and preparation for Easter. Many people choose to give up something during this time - perhaps chocolate, social media, or a favorite activity. While this can be a meaningful practice, it often becomes a temporary adjustment rather than a lasting change in our relationship with God. We may successfully avoid chocolate for 40 days, but once Easter arrives, we return to our old habits. This begs the question: Is this truly what God desires from us?

The book of Genesis offers a profound insight into God's expectations for our relationship with Him. When God appeared to Abraham, He instructed him to "walk before me and be blameless" (Genesis 17:1). The Amplified version expands on this, saying "Walk habitually before Me [with integrity, knowing that you are always in My presence]." This isn't about occasional check-ins with God or setting aside specific times for spiritual activities. It's about living every moment with an awareness of God's presence and aligning our actions, thoughts, and decisions with His will.

So how do we move from treating God as a priority to making Him the center of our lives? It starts with a shift in perspective. Instead of compartmentalizing our spiritual life, we need to invite God into every area of our existence. This means seeking His guidance not just in traditionally "spiritual" matters, but in our work, our relationships, our leisure activities, and even the mundane tasks of daily life.

Consider the apostle Paul's words in Colossians 3:17: "And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." This verse challenges us to infuse every action, every conversation, every decision with our faith. It's about transforming our entire life into an act of worship.

This shift doesn't happen overnight. It requires intentional practice and a willingness to change our habits. Here are a few practical ways to start centering your life around God:

1. Practice continuous prayer: This doesn't mean being on your knees 24/7. It's about maintaining an ongoing dialogue with God throughout your day. Share your thoughts, seek His guidance, and express gratitude in the midst of your daily activities.

2. Seek God's perspective in all situations: When faced with decisions or challenges, make it a habit to ask, "God, what do You think about this?" This simple practice can dramatically shift your decision-making process.

3. Infuse your passions with purpose: Whether it's your career, a hobby, or a relationship, consider how you can use it to glorify God and serve others. This transforms even "secular" activities into spiritual practices.

4. Cultivate gratitude: Regularly acknowledging God's blessings in your life keeps you attuned to His presence and goodness.

5. Study Scripture with application in mind: As you read the Bible, constantly ask yourself, "How does this apply to my life right now?" This helps bridge the gap between spiritual knowledge and practical living.

The goal is to develop a lifestyle where turning to God becomes as natural and instinctive as breathing. It's about cultivating a relationship where our first response in any situation - whether it's stress, joy, confusion, or success - is to connect with God.

This shift in perspective can radically transform our lives. When we invite God into every aspect of our existence, we begin to see the world through His eyes. Mundane tasks become opportunities for gratitude. Challenges become invitations to trust and grow. Relationships become avenues for expressing God's love.

Moreover, this approach frees us from the guilt and pressure that often accompanies a checklist mentality to spirituality. No longer do we need to feel bad about "not spending enough time with God." Instead, we recognize that every moment is an opportunity to connect with Him.

As we embrace this holistic approach to our relationship with God, we align ourselves more closely with the exhortation in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This isn't about forced happiness or constant verbal prayer. It's about cultivating a heart that is continually oriented towards God, finding reasons for joy and gratitude even in difficult circumstances, and maintaining an ongoing conversation with our Creator.

In conclusion, the invitation before us is clear: Let's move beyond treating God as merely a priority on our to-do list. Instead, let's invite Him to be the very foundation of our lives, the lens through which we view every experience, decision, and relationship. As we do this, we'll find that our entire life becomes an act of worship, and our relationship with God grows deeper and more meaningful than we ever imagined possible.
